Britney Spears has been arrested, and then released from jail, reportedly allegedly for driving under the influence, in southern California, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
Jail records viewed by The Hollywood Reporter indicate Spears, 44, was arrested on Wednesday night at 9:28 p.m. local time by the California Highway Patrol, and was booked into a local jail at 3:02 a.m.
Spears’ inmate record does not indicate why the pop star was arrested, but TMZ, which was the first to report on her arrest, points to a DUI charge. The pop superstar is due to make a court appearance on May 4 at the Ventura County Superior Court.
A rep for Spears has not yet responded to The Hollywood Reporter‘s request for comment.
In 2021, Spears was freed from a court-directed conservatorship, which included father Jamie Spears in the role of conservator. Spears’ conservatorship was established in 2008, after she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation. Her conservatorship and offscreen controversies have overshadowed her pop stardom and acting career in recent years.
Spears made her television debut on Star Search, and her first big break came in the early 1990s as she starred alongside Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell on Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club.
Spears then became a pop star with a series of hits starting with 1999’s “…Baby One More Time.”
She recently sold off some of her rights tied to her iconic catalog, including “… Baby One More Time,” “Oops! … I Did It Again!,” “Stronger” and “Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” to music company Primary Wave.
