
Britain’s “mansion tax,” which is due to become a reality in 2028 almost two decades after it was first proposed, promises a lot of trouble for little reward. The annual levy, on homes valued at more than £2 million ($2.6 million), will raise relatively modest revenue while leaving in place a property-based local taxation system that’s riddled with anomalies and unfairness. In an area ripe for overhaul, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves opted for the quick and dirty.
