BMW Drivers Now Have Access to Tesla Superchargers, 15th Auto Brand to Gain Access

BMW electric vehicle drivers are the latest to gain access to certain Tesla Superchargers in the US (through the North American Charging Standard, or NACS). That makes it the 15th auto brand to get access, either through NACS adapters or a built-in NACS charging port.

One very important thing to note — and I wish all relevant parties were more clear about this — is that non-Tesla drivers can only use more modern Supercharger stations. Initial versions are not compatible. I regularly charge at two different Supercharger stations, one of which has modern chargers and one has older chargers. I constantly see non-Tesla EVs charging at the former, even though there are Electrify America stations right next to them (but often full) and now Mercedes EV charging stations (for various automakers as well) across the parking lot. At the latter, though, it’s routine to see a non-Tesla EV pull up to charge and then find out they can’t charge there. If you’re driving a BMW EV and want to Supercharge, just make sure you take your car to a compatible station.

Also note that BWM is not releasing an official NACS adapter until the 2nd quarter of 2026. For now, though, BMW EV drivers can find 3rd party NACS-to-CCS1 adapters out there. Shop with caution.

Here are the exact BMW EV models that can Supercharge/NACS charge:

• i4: 2022-2026 model years
• i5: 2024-2025 model years
  • 2026 i5 (eDrive40 and xDrive40) after software update in Spring 2026
• i7: 2023-2026 model years
• iX: 2022-2025 model years
  • 2026 iX (all versions) after software update in Spring 2026

They do need to get and use the Tesla app to charge.
