Bill Maher was not a fan of Larry David’s recent satirical “My Dinner With Adolf” essay in the New York Times. In a new interview with Piers Morgan, Maher slammed the comedian’s essay, which he said compared his recent meeting with Trump to a meeting with Hitler, calling the scorching take “insulting to six million dead Jews.”
“To use the Hitler thing — first of all, it’s kind of insulting to six million dead Jews,” Maher told Morgan on his podcast. “It’s an argument you kind of lost just to start it. Look, maybe it’s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place.”
Maher added: “He is the GOAT of evil. We’re just going to have to leave it like that.”
In his New York Times essay, David spoke about a fake meeting with Hitler saying that it “seemed so human” and a “completely different animal” than what we know of him. “‘I must say, mein Führer, I’m so thankful I came. Although we disagree on many issues, it doesn’t mean that we have to hate each other,’” David imagined himself telling Hitler. “And with that, I gave him a Nazi salute and walked out into the night.”
At the time, a New York Times editor clarified that the piece was “not equating Trump with Hitler” but more about “seeing people for who they really are.” Speaking to Morgan, Maher said the essay was not “my favorite moment of our friendship.”
“The minute you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve lost the argument,” Maher said. “Hitler, Nazis — nobody has been harder, and more prescient I must say, about Donald Trump than me. I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. The fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either.”
Maher joked that he and David “might be friends again” and that he can “take it when people disagree with me.”
“That’s not exactly the way I would’ve done it,” he said. “Again, the irony: let’s go back to what my original thing was. There’s got to be a better way than hurling insults and not talking to people. If I can talk to Trump, I can talk to Larry David too.”
Maher revealed last week that he had met with Trump, a man he has long criticized, during an episode of his late night show, Real Time. “Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was — I swear to God — absent, at least on this night with this guy,” Maher said of his Trump meeting.
