Greater Noida: Fresh trouble seems to be brewing within the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) as 28 members signed a ‘no-confidence motion’ against president Ajay Singh during the Special General Meeting here on Thursday. Singh, however, rejected the motion questioning its validity.
“There was an SGM today, and unfortunately a no-confidence motion was brought with 28 signatures. But the claim that it came from three-fourths of the members is absolutely incorrect,” he said.
“Many of the signatories are not even members. And the same members have also signed another petition expressing confidence in me, in significantly larger numbers. These issues are decided through elections. Elections have been held, certified by World Boxing, and recognised by the Government of India. Our focus must remain on boxing—on the athletes, on the camps, on the championships we must prepare for. We cannot be distracted by these things,” Singh said.
Singh was elected president of the BFI for a third term earlier this year. The lead up to the BFI election was marred by internal conflict and disagreement over poll processes. Some state units of the BFI had moved various courts in the country raising objections to the election technicalities. The matter is being heard in Delhi high court. Meanwhile, the Sports Ministry, on Nov 11, issued “renewal of annual recognition of BFI i.e. upto 31.12.2025, subject to the final outcome of the relevant court case(s).”
In the petition, members objected to holding of the SGM itself.
“The court has already clarified that any action or decision taken by the newly elected executive committee of the BFI shall be subject to the orders passed in the writ petition,” according to the motion signed by BFI members on Wednesday.
“…convening and proceeding with an SGM and to take major decisions likes confirmation of AGM minutes, adoption of audited financials, appointment of auditors, approval of budgets etc may not be appropriate at this stage and ought to be reconsidered in light of the continuing pendency of the above proceedings of the Hon’ble Court,” the no-confidence motion said.
The undersigned members expressed displeasure over the “mala fide and arbitrary conduct of BFI” under Singh’s stewardship, amendment of BFI constitution without following due procedure.
The newly elected BFI executive body has the recognition of the World Boxing. On November 11, the Sports Ministry has also “renewed annual recognition of BFI i.e. up to 31.12.2025, subject to the final outcome of the relevant court case(s)”.
