Anthony Boyle is set to star opposite Julia Garner in a Netflix limited series about the rise and fall of FTX, Variety has learned.
Boyle will star as Sam Bankman-Fried in the series, which is titled “The Altruists,” while Garner will play Caroline Ellison. It was reported earlier in May that Garner was negotiating for the role, with the casting now official. As previously reported, Netflix has picked up eight episodes of the series.
The official logline for “The Altruists” states, “The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye – and then seduced, coaxed, and teased each other into stealing $8 billion.”
Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt serve as executive producers and co-showrunners. Garner will executive produce in addition to starring. James Ponsoldt will direct the first episode and executive produce. Vinnie Malhotra and Jessie Dicovitsky executive produce for Higher Ground Productions along with Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, Tonia Davis, and Lauren Morelli.
The role brings Garner back to Netflix, where she previously starred in the hit crime drama “Ozark” as well as the limited crime drama “Inventing Anna.” The latter show was also a Vox/New York Magazine and Netflix collaboration. She received three Emmy nominations — with three wins — for best supporting actress in a drama for “Ozark” and a nomination for best actress in a limited series for “Inventing Anna.”
Boyle’s TV credits include recent shows like “Say Nothing” at FX, both “Manhunt” and “Masters of the Air” at Apple TV+, and “The Plot Against America” at HBO. He has starred in films such as “Tetris” and “Tolkien,” while he originated the role of Scorpius Malfoy in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” in the West End and on Broadway. His role in the play earned him an Olivier Award as well as Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations.
He is repped by WME, Hamilton Hodell, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
FTX was founded in 2019 and became one of the biggest and most well-known cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. But in 2022, the company imploded, with billions of dollars in customer funds reportedly missing and investigations underway by federal agencies. Bankman-Fried founded FTX, with Ellison serving as CEO of the affiliated crypto trading firm Alameda Research. Both were eventually convicted on various counts of wire and securities fraud, as well as money laundering.
