Netflix is detonating a new Kathryn Bigelow joint for the fall awards season.
The streaming giant has announced the title and release date of Kathryn Bigelow’s highly anticipated new White House film: “A House of Dynamite.” The star-studded thriller will debut in select theaters on a still-to-be-announced date in October, before streaming globally on Netflix beginning Oct. 24.
Starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee and Jason Clarke, the film is expected to be one of Netflix’s marquee fall releases and a potential awards contender.
The official logline reads: “When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.”
“A House of Dynamite” marks Bigelow’s first feature since 2017’s “Detroit” and signals a return to the tense, politically-charged storytelling that has defined much of her work.

Bigelow made history in 2010 when she became the first woman to win the Academy Award for best director, for her 2009 war drama “The Hurt Locker.” The film won six Oscars in total, including best picture, original screenplay (Mark Boal), film editing (Bob Murawski and Chris Innis), sound mixing (Paul N.J. Ottosson and Ray Beckett), and sound editing (Ottosson). It earned widespread acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of soldiers in the Iraq War. Her other credits include “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012), which was also nominated for best picture, as well as “Near Dark” (1987), “Blue Steel” (1990), “Point Break” (1991) and “Strange Days” (1995). She remains one of the most influential and groundbreaking directors working in the industry today.
The film reunites Bigelow with a seasoned creative team. The screenplay is written by Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie”), with Bigelow producing alongside Oppenheim and Greg Shapiro (one of the Oscar-winning producers of “The Hurt Locker”), all serving as producers under the p.g.a. banner. Executive producers include Brian Bell and Sarah Bremner.
Key artisan talents include Oscar-nominated cinematographer Barry Ackroyd; production designer Jeremy Hindle; costume designer Sarah Edwards; and two-time Oscar-winning editor Kirk Baxter. Music is composed by Academy Award winner Volker Bertelmann (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), with sound design by Paul N.J. Ottosson and casting by Susanne Scheel.
“A House of Dynamite” is part of what appears to be a robust fall slate for Netflix, which also includes Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” Edward Berger’s “Ballad of a Small Player,” Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” and Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” acquired out of Cannes.
A full trailer and additional production details for “A House of Dynamite” are expected to be released in the coming weeks. The first poster is below.
