‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Holds Top Spot as Korean Box Office Cools


DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” retained its lead at the South Korean box office over the June 13–15 weekend, grossing $2.3 million from 318,960 admissions.

The live-action remake has now amassed $7.3 million after two weeks on release, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council.

Korean film “Hi-Five” remained in second place with $1.5 million and 228,720 admissions. It has now earned $10.2 million in total.

South Korean occult thriller “The Pact” followed in third place, grossing $848,542 from 119,136 admissions for a cumulative $4.1 million.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” dropped to fourth with $799,446 and 112,952 viewers. The Tom Cruise-led sequel has now generated $22.8 million and over 3.17 million admissions since its May 17 debut.

Japanese animated feature “Magic Candies” ranked fifth with $82,204 from 22,445 viewers, pushing its cumulative total to $348,975.

“Lilo & Stitch” held sixth place with $145,837 for a running total of $3.2 million, while re-released Italian classic “Life Is Beautiful” placed seventh with $76,499.

Australian supernatural horror “Bring Her Back” added $60,969 in its second weekend for a total of $328,608.

Korean title “Midnight Sun” debuted at No. 9 with $53,691 from 7,667 admissions and has a total of $113,216. Directed by Cho Young-jun, the film stars Jung Ji-so as Mi-sol, a musician suffering from a medical condition that prevents her from being exposed to sunlight. Her life takes a turn when she meets Seok-hyun (Cha Hak-yeon), a young man who runs a fruit truck. Despite her condition, a romance begins to blossom.

Rounding out the top 10, Japanese anime “Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing” earned $53,003, bringing its cumulative total to $434,300.

The top ten films earned a combined $6 million over the June 13–15 weekend, down from $10.8 million the previous week.
