The late Sly Stone was known as a wildly inventive musician, whose discography spanned genres and audiences throughout his decades-long career. As the lead singer of Sly and the Family Stone, the artist logged hits like “Everyday People” and “Family Affair,” but in his 2023 audiobook, Stone unveiled three never-before-heard songs, giving listeners an exclusive peek into his songwriting and producing prowess.

The previously unreleased tracks are part of Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), the singer’s official memoir named after the 1969 song of the same name recorded by Sly and the Family Stone. Available in the audiobook version of the memoir, the new songs are joined by jingles from Stone’s time as a DJ on KSOL, along with his life story, co-written with New York Times bestselling author, Ben Greenman.

Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir

Told through Stone’s own words, the memoir chronicles his childhood in California and his early beginnings as a radio programmer and DJ, before he and his brother Freddie joined forces in 1966 to form Sly and the Family Stone. The book follows the band’s rise to fame, detailing memorable moments on stage, as well as moments off-stage that threatened to derail the group, including Stone’s “decades in the grips of addiction.”

As the publisher notes state, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) is a vivid, gripping, sometimes terrifying, and ultimately affirming tour through Sly’s life and career. Set on stages and in mansions, in the company of family and of other celebrities, it’s a story about flawed humanity and flawless artistry.”

Reviewers call the book a “page turner, as inspirations and details about every song, album, and performance are laid out.” Another says the book is “honest, thoughtful, and concise in the sharing of memories both good and bad.”

Written by Stone and Greenman (who has also penned memoirs with George Clinton and Brian Wilson), the memoir also features a forward from Questlove, who honored the artist in an emotional post on Monday, writing, “From the moment his music reached me in the early 1970s, it became a part of my soul.”

Stone’s cause of death was said to be due to a “prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues,” according to a statement by his family. He was 82.
