‘Lilo & Stitch’ Leads U.K., Ireland Box Office to 50% Surge in May

Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” and Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” dominated the U.K. and Ireland box office in May, driving the market to a robust £109.1 million ($147.7 million) total that represents a 50% increase over the same period last year, according to Comscore.

The reboot claimed the top spot with $37.4 million after just two weeks in theaters, already surpassing the $17.7 million lifetime total of the original 2002 animated film. The performance makes it the third-highest grossing release of 2025 in the territory, trailing only “A Minecraft Movie” ($76.4 million) and “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” ($62.7 million).

The latest “Lilo & Stitch” has also outpaced other recent Disney live-action remakes, including this year’s “Snow White” ($15.6 million) and previous efforts like 2019’s “Dumbo” ($34.0 million) and 2023’s “The Little Mermaid” ($37.1 million).

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” secured second place with $26 million for the month, positioning it as the fourth-highest earner of the year. The latest entry in the action franchise has become the fourth-highest grossing “Mission: Impossible” film in the U.K., behind “Dead Reckoning Part One” ($36 million), “Fallout” ($33 million), and “Rogue Nation” ($28.7 million). The performance also marks Cruise’s seventh-best theatrical showing in the territory.

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” rounded out the top three with $21.7 million, surpassing the lifetime totals of “Eternals” ($20 million), “X-Men” ($20.2 million), and “X-Men: First Class” ($20.3 million). The superhero ensemble piece is closing in on “Captain America: Brave New World,” which earned $24.4 million following its February release.

Horror franchise “Final Destination: Bloodlines” claimed fourth place with $13.4 million, making it the third-highest grossing entry in the series behind “The Final Destination” ($17.3 million) and the original “Final Destination” ($14.1 million).

Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller “Sinners” added $9.5 million in its holdover month, bringing its total to $21.2 million and establishing it as Michael B. Jordan’s second-highest grossing film after “Black Panther” ($68.5 million).

New releases “Karate Kid: Legends” opened in seventh place with $4.2 million, while “The Salt Path” also debuted last weekend, earning $3.9 million. “The Salt Path” currently ranks as the fifth-highest grossing British film of the year, trailing just behind “Marching Powder” ($4.1 million).

Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” placed ninth with $3.0 million, making it the director’s seventh-highest grossing film, surpassing “Moonrise Kingdom” ($2.7 million). The documentary “Ocean With David Attenborough” rounded out the top ten with $1.9 million.

The May results helped push the year-to-date box office 20% ahead of 2024 and 8% ahead of 2023.

June releases include “Ballerina” from the John Wick universe, the live-action “How To Train Your Dragon” adaptation, Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later,” Pixar’s “Elio,” Brad Pitt’s racing epic “F1 The Movie,” and the anticipated sequel “M3GAN 2.0.”
