Melissa Barrera is getting back in the horror game.
The “Scream” and “Scream VI” star is to take the lead in upcoming feature “Inhabit,” Variety can reveal. The film comes from writer/director by Adam Alleca (“Standoff,” “The Last House on the Left,” “Delirium”) and is described as blending “psychological horror with relentless supernatural dread” and offering a “chilling exploration of trauma, motherhood, and the responsibility of unfathomable power.”
Logical Pictures Group are financing the project and launching international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market, and is jointly repping U.S. rights with Range Select.
“Inhabit” follows a young woman who, following a traumatic life-changing event, moves into a rundown apartment complex in search of a fresh start. When she’s terrorized by bizarre occurrences — unhinged neighbors, uncanny stalkers, unprovoked violence — she comes to believe she’s being targeted by a possessive force that breaks her understanding of reality. As the synopsis reads: “A force that can only be overcome by confronting the darkest parts of her own nature.”
“True horror means forcing the audience to confront a universal existential fear no one’s ever dared to tell a story about before. I’ve found such a fear in ‘Inhabit,’” said Alleca. “My inspirations are the kind of audacious, character-driven thrillers I love, like ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ ‘The Exorcist,’ and ‘Get Out.’ Their innovation is my North Star.”
The film is being produced by Ric Roman Waugh, Brendon Boyea and Kenner Bolt for Cinemachine, the production company behind “Shelter,” “Greenland,” and “Greenland Migration,” alongside Frédéric Fiore, Ryan Wickers and Andrei Kamarowsky for Logical Pictures Group.
“With ‘Inhabit,’ Adam has crafted a story that can shatter open the conversation on a subject often considered taboo,” said Boyea from Cinemachine. “Driven by his singular vision, it delivers a deeply intimate and extremely unnerving experience. Paired with Melissa’s powerful presence, we see this as a film that will resonate on both a visceral and human level, and we’re thrilled to be a part of bringing it to life.”
Added Kamarowsky, head of International at Logical Pictures: “’Inhabit’ is exactly the kind of smart, character-driven horror we believe can travel — a contained nightmare with a powerful emotional engine that just keeps tightening its grip. Adam Alleca has built a world that feels frightening and commercially compelling, and with Melissa Barrera at its center, we believe the film has the intensity and audience appeal to stand out in today’s international marketplace.”
“Inhabit” marks the first major film project announcement starring Barrera since she was fired from “Scream 7” and let go by WME after posting social media messages criticizing the Israeli government for its deadly assaults on Gaza in late 2023. In a recent interview with Variety, she discussed the incident and being sidelined from the industry for over a year. She also said she was launching a production company and wanted to work with “anyone pro-Palestinian.”
