Beta Cinema has added two films to its Cannes Market slate: “The Other Side,” an Alpine-set adventure thriller starring Nina Hoss, and “The Rome Eight,” an underdog story based on true events, starring Oliver Masucci, who was in Oscar-nominated “Never Look Away,” German box-office hit “Look Who’s Back” and Netflix hit “Dark,” and Felix Kammerer, who broke out in Oscar winner “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
“The Other Side,” written and directed by Mariko Minoguchi, is described as “an emotionally resonant adventure-thriller set in a near-future society shaped by the aftermath of a devastating pandemic.”
Hoss stars as Hanna, a former doctor who has retreated into isolation in the Alpine wilderness after losing her family to disease. When she encounters an injured stranger, her hard-won solitude — and thus survival — is put to the test.
The film is produced by Trimafilm in co-production with Rundfilm and also stars Precious Mariam Sanusi and Barbara Petritsch. Felix Pflieger serves as director of photography. X-Verleih will be releasing the film in Germany toward the end of this year.
“The Rome Eight,” directed by Hannu Salonen, is set in a divided post-war Germany. It follows visionary rowing coach Karl Adam who defies convention with radical training methods, transforming a group of misfits into an unstoppable crew. Their sensational victory at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome is “a symbol of hope and reconciliation for an entire generation,” Beta said.
The film, which is in post-production, features an ensemble cast that includes Masucci, Kammerer and Svenja Jung (“Deutschland 89”). It is produced by Ivo-Alexander Beck at Ninety-Minute Film, in co-production with Adams Acht, Sunday Filmproduktion and Majestic Filmproduktion. Majestic is releasing the film in Germany on Sept. 17.
