Wuthering Heights, Emerald Fennell’s steamy adaptation of the classic Emily Brontë novel, is now available on digital. The film stars Margot Robbie as Catherine and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, and is replete with Emerald Fennell’s shock-and-awe flourishes and a superb soundtrack from Charli XCX.
Despite opening to mixed reviews in February, Wuthering Heights was a hit at the box office, pulling in over $230 million against an $80 million budget. It’s available to buy on digital for $24.99 from Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. As a Warner Bros. film, Wuthering Heights will likely end up on HBO Max, but no streaming date has been announced yet.
As for the physical media release, the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD versions of the film are available to preorder now, and will be released on May 5. The physical release includes bonus features like director commentary and a featurette on Jacqueline Durran’s costume design.
Fennell’s adaptation was decidedly loose, and it’s why the film’s title was stylized in quotes, as she explained to W Magazine. “All of the adaptations that have come before it are amazing. That’s absolutely why the title is in inverted commas. I’m aware of how personal the book is to so many of us, so I wanted to communicate as early as possible that it could only ever be an attempt to take a tiny piece of the book and make sense of it.”
As for the soundtrack, Charli XCX pulled from a deep well of influences, with the opening track featuring none other than Velvet Underground founding member and experimental musician John Cale. The soundtrack also features a guest vocal from Sky Ferreira, their first collaboration since 2019.
“There are better adaptations of Wuthering Heights, and there are far, far worse adaptations of Wuthering Heights,” wrote Rolling Stone’s David Fear. “Yet you will certainly not find a hornier version of this material than Fennell’s fast-and-loose spin on the torrid tale of Heathcliff and Catherine, childhood pals turned paramours who can never truly be together and genuinely can’t keep their hands off each other. It may in fact be the horniest literary adaptation ever made.”
