The Match Factory has closed multiple distribution deals for its Berlin festival award winners: Lance Hammer’s Queen at Sea and Rose by Markus Schleinzer.
Sandra Hüller won the Berlinale Silver Bear for best leading performance for Rose, in which she plays a 17th-Century German woman trying to pass for a man. The film, embraced by critics — including The Hollywood Reporter‘s David Rooney, who called it “an eloquent demolition of the gender binary” — was snatched up by buyers across Europe.
Match Factory inked deals for France (KMBO), Spain (Avalon), Benelux (Paradiso), Poland (Gutek), Denmark (Ost For Paradis), Sweden & Iceland (Edge), Norway (Fidalgo), Finland (Future Film Oy), Hungary (Cirko Film), Portugal (No Comboio), Greece (Weirdwave), Czech Republic & Slovakia (Zero Gravity), Bulgaria (Beta Film), Former Yugoslavia (MCF Megacom), and the Baltics (Scanorama). Additional sales include for South Korea (Pancinema), Middle East & North Africa (Gulf Film), and Israel (Lev Cinemas). Piffl will release the film in Germany, Filmladen in Austria and Filmcoopi in Switzerland.
Queen at Sea, Lance Hammer’s look at the impact of dementia on a family, which THR reviewer Leslie Felperin called “sincere, urgent and unflinchingly honest”, won both the Silver Bear Jury Prize and the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall, playing husband and wife. Juliette Binoche and Florence Hunt also star.
The Match Factory secured distribution deals for the film in multiple territories including UK & Ireland (Curzon), Poland (Aurora), Benelux (Imagine Film), South Korea (Challan), Switzerland (Frenetic Films), Greece (Cinobo), Portugal (FILMS4YOU), Former Yugoslavia (Investacommerce AG), the Baltics (Scanorama), Taiwan (Andrews Film) and LATAM (Cine Canibal).
Negotiations for additional territories for both films are ongoing.
