Netflix’s ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Renewed for Season 2

Netflix has set a premiere date for its reboot of Little House on the Prairie — and ensured that there will be at least one more season with the Ingalls family.

The streamer has ordered a second season of Little House, several months ahead of the show’s debut. The series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved novels will premiere on July 9.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive,” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a statement. “We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”

The new series will retrace the steps of the Ingalls family as told in Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books. The show stars Alice Halsey as Laura, Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister, Mary, and Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald as Pa and Ma Ingalls.

“We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut,” said Jinny Howe, head of U.S. and Canada scripted series at Netflix. “The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on season one has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”

The original Little House on the Prairie series ran for nine seasons (1974-83) and 200 episodes on NBC and was followed by several TV movies. Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Karen Grassle and Melissa Sue Anderson led the cast.

Netflix describes its take on Little House as “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West” that will give a “kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

CBS Studios and Anonymous Content produce Little House on the Prairie. Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries) executive produces with Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions, Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel. Sarah Adina Smith, Julie Anne Robinson, Kat Candler, Erica Tremblay and Sydney Freeland are the directors for season one.
