XPENG had a long run of huge sales growth in the past year or two. In January 2025, for example, sales reached 30,350 units, which was a 268% increase over the 8,250 sales of January 2024. However, by December, that growth has slowed down, and 2026 is not kicking off as strongly as 2025. In fact, last month’s sales dropped 34% to 20,011 units.
This may be a broader market issue, as will be implied by the coming sales report of a much bigger automaker, BYD. Or perhaps the 2025 level just shot up so much so fast that it was unsustainable for the time being. Maybe it is about customers waiting on certain models. The Chinese EV market is so huge, so competitive, and so dynamic that it can be quite hard to track and decipher. We will try to see in coming weeks what we can learn.
What we do know, though, is that XPENG is targeting strong growth across 2026. The company is aiming to reach 550,000 to 600,000 vehicle sales in 2026, which would be a 28% to 40% increase over XPENG’s 2025 total of 429,445. So, clearly, the company has plans for model launches and market expansion throughout the year to achieve those higher targets.
For now, the company is highlighting the climate benefit of its recent sales, its latest product launch, and its tremendous geographic expansion through 2025. “In January 2026, XPENG delivered a total of 20,011 vehicles. These deliveries are expected to reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 300,000 tons — equivalent to the carbon absorption of 4.94 million tree seedlings over 10 years,” the company writes. “The XPENG P7+ was launched simultaneously across 36 countries, and made its European launch at the 2026 Brussels Motor Show in January. As of December 31, 2025, XPENG has expanded its global presence to 60 countries and regions. Its overseas sales network now encompasses 380 physical stores, representing a year-over-year growth of more than 150%, while its worldwide sales and service network has grown to a total of over 1,000 outlets.”
That is truly enormous, impressive growth and already broad reach. I’m eager to see what 2026, 2027, and beyond have in store, including how the company will bounce back from the slow January start to 2026.
