X (Twitter) Goes Down Again, Thousands of Users Report Errors

For the second time in less than a week, Elon Musk’s X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — suffered widespread technical problems. But the outage appeared to be resolved within a few minutes.

Error reports with X surged around noon ET Thursday, according to uptime monitoring site Downdetector. As of 12:11 p.m. ET, more than 20,000 users had submitted problems reports for the social networking site, per Downdetector. The problems were affecting both x.com and the X mobile apps. About 50% of the user reports cited the website, while 47% indicated issues with the app and 3% reported login problems.

The issues that affected X seemed to have cleared up within 15 minutes or so after the initial outage reports. According to the X Developer Platform status page, there was a “service-wide outage” with “intermittent errors” on Jan. 22, along with a note that said the “Incident has been resolved.” The timestamp on the message indicated the issues occurred from 17:30 UTC to 17:45 UTC (12:30-12:45 p.m. ET).

But the latest issues are the latest in a string of technical glitches that have disrupted the platform in recent months.

X was down for a period of time on Jan. 16, following a similar widespread outage in November 2024 that lasted nearly 3 hours, when tens of thousands of users reported error messages like “Internal server error / Error code 500” and “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed.”

The social network, which is a subsidiary of Musk’s xAI artificial intelligence company, had multiple outages in 2025. That included the social network’s rolling outages on March 10, 2025, which Musk blamed on “a massive cyberattack” against the platform.
