Donald Trump took to Truth Social early Saturday to share a photo of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in custody after the United States conducted air strikes against Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, late Friday and into Saturday.
Trump confirmed the strikes were a U.S. operation in a Truth Social post on Saturday morning. He wrote, “The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
In the opening of the conference, Trump called the strikes a “spectacular assault” at a level that “people had not seen since World War II.” The president also said that Maduro’s wife, Cila Flores, had also been captured, adding that they both have been indicted in the Southern District of New York “for their campaign of deadly narco-terrorism against the United States and its citizens.”
Trump claimed that “not a single American service member was killed” during the operation. According to The New York Times, there is no indication that the U.S. military is currently in Venezuela.
The president said that the United States is going to “run” the country until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” of power can be facilitated. Trump added that he hopes for “peace, liberty and Justice for the great people of Venezuela.”
Per Reuters, a spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the U.S. strikes against Venezuela set “a dangerous precedent.” Venezuela and Colombia have requested a 15-member Security Council meeting to discuss the matter.
