Putin’s Brief Ukraine Truce Frustrates Trump Plan to End War
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a new temporary ceasefire in his war on Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II, drawing criticism from the US as it seeks to negotiate a peace deal. The three-day truce will start on May 8 and end at midnight on May 10, the Kremlin said on its Telegram channel on Monday. Russia remains ready to hold peace talks to resolve the conflict with Ukraine, it added.
The announcement met with disappointment in Washington. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump wants a permanent end to hostilities and is “increasingly frustrated” with the leaders of both Russia and Ukraine.
The latest offer of a halt to the fighting comes as Russia prepares to mark its May 9 anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany with a military parade on Moscow’s Red Square. (Source: Bloomberg)
