Donald Trump continued his tariff barrage. The president threatened a 30% rate for the European Union and Mexico from August if they can’t negotiate better terms, setting up a test for financial markets that have taken many recent trade developments in stride. The EU postponed its countermeasures against the US to allow for further talks and is said to be weighing coordination with other countries. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned a 30% levy would hit the country’s exporters “to the core,” while President Claudia Sheinbaum projected confidence that Mexico would reach a deal to avert the duties.
