It has been a tough couple of years for Volkswagen Group sales of electric cars. The market in China has flipped during that time from one that favored European legacy brands to one that now prefers products from domestic manufacturers. In 2025, only two models were from foreign brands — the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. All other top sellers were from domestic brands, a clear indication that the Chinese electric vehicle market has matured.
Chinese customers are no longer interested in products that are a generation or two behind. Today, the offerings from domestic manufacturers represent the state of the art in the auto industry, which is forcing foreign manufacturers to play catchup.
Policy & Incentives
Other factors weighing on the Group are shifting regulations and incentives. Germany abruptly cancelled its electric car incentives in December, 2023 and the EU keeps adjusting its exhaust emission standards to adapt to what it calls “market realities.”
After a downbeat year in 2024, the sales numbers for 2025 show Volkswagen Group delivered 983,100 electric vehicles worldwide in 2025, almost one third more than in 2024. In Europe, deliveries increased by 66%. That’s the good news. In China, they fell by 44%, according to Electrive. The company also reported a 58% increase in global plug-in hybrid sales, which totaled 428,000 units.
In a press release, the company said data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows the Volkswagen brand has a market share across all drive types of 19.5% in its home market, which is a slight increase over 2024. The best selling electric car from Volkswagen in 2025 was the ID.7, which is available both as a sedan and a wagon. It recorded 35,000 sales in Germany and 76,600 sales across Europe — a 132% increase over 2024.
New Models For 2026
Volkswagen expects demand for its electric vehicles to rise in the current year as it rolls out many new all-electric models, including the ID. Polo with a starting price of around €25,000 and the production version of the ID. Cross compact SUV.
Martin Sander, the board member in charge of sales and marketing for the Group, said, “The trend in our delivery figures underscores that our products are being well received by our customers and also that we are on the right track with our brand strategy. We expect the market environment to remain challenging overall in 2026. All the same, I firmly believe that thanks to our refreshed, attractive product portfolio and our clear focus on efficiency and competitiveness we are very well equipped to rise to this challenge. In China alone, we will be bringing out more than ten new electric models this year.”
Other Group Brands Contributed
Volkswagen Group includes a number of different brands. Some of those lesser known labels (at least outside of Europe) had an outsize impact on 2025 sales totals. Volkswagen branded cars accounted for 382,000 battery-electric sales worldwide in 2025 — a drop of 0.2% compared to 2024. But the Volkswagen brand increased its EV deliveries significantly in 2025, particularly in Germany and Europe. Deliveries rose to 93,800 vehicles in Germany — better than a 60% increase — and to 247,900 total units in Europe — a 49% increase. Outside of Europe, however, Volkswagen sales were lackluster at best.
The growth of EV sales at other Volkswagen Group divisions accounted for most of the sales increase in 2025. Škoda EV sales last year totaled 174,900 — a 120% increase. Of that number, the Škoda Elroq accounted for 95,300 units, making it the third bestselling electric model in the entire Group, behind only the ID.4/5 and ID.3. Electric and plug-in hybrid sales accounted for more than 25% of total Škoda sales.
Seat/Cupra also delivered impressive results with 79,700 electric cars sold — an increase of 66%. Of that total, 43,700 cars were Cupra Born models and 36,000 were Cupra Tavascan models. Combined, they accounted for nearly 25% of Cupra sales in 2025.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles doubled its BEV sales from 28,800 in 2024 to 58,600 in 2025 — a 103% increase over 2024 and just over 16% of the division’s total sales. The ID. Buzz contributed 60,700 units globally — up 102%. Overall, the brands that are part of the core of Volkswagen Group achieved an increase in EV sales of 29%.
Of the so-called Progressive brands in the Group — Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini — only Audi offers battery-electric models. In 2025, its BEV sales were up more than 35% to 233,000. The A6 e-tron at 37,000 units and the Q6 e-tron at 84,000 units were particularly popular in 2025.
Porsche numbers are reported separately. In 2025, it suffered reversals thanks to policy changes in the US, which is one of its largest markets. Despite those headwinds, it posted an increase in total BEV sales from 39,100 in 2024 to 61,700 in 2025 — a nearly 58% increase. That was mostly due to the battery-powered Macan, which did not get into full production until 2025. Porsche delivered 45,367 Macan electrics and 16,339 Taycans in 2025. Globally, battery-powered cars accounted for over 22% of Porsche sales.
Volkswagen Group also manufactures medium and heavy duty trucks as part of the Traton division. After a down year in 2024, MAN contributed 1,970 electric commercial vehicles in 2025, up from 740 the previous year — a 168% increase — while Scania deliveries rose to 600 units — a 126% gain. Overall, sales of electric vehicles by Traton increased in 2025 by nearly 86% to 3,200 vehicles, following a 17% decline in 2024.
Things were not so rosy in other market segments. Volkswagen Truck & Bus was down 49% compared to 2024 and International recorded a 3.3% decline. International is the brand that includes the rights to the Scout IP. Deliveries of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from Scout, which will be manufactured and sold exclusively in North America, are expected to begin later this year.
Thoughts From The Chairman
Oliver Blume, the current CEO of Volkswagen Group, said in regard to the company’s 2025 sales numbers, “The Volkswagen Group was on a solid track in 2025 – despite a challenging market environment. With around nine million vehicles delivered, our sales remain stable, thanks to our attractive products across all brands and drive types. We have made good progress in comprehensively renewing our product range.”
“Our new vehicles are receiving an excellent response and have won numerous awards. With more than 20 new models, we will continue our product offensive at full speed in 2026. These include further innovative vehicles from our model offensive in China and our Electric Urban Car Family. Entry-level e-mobility with top technology from Volkswagen, CUPRA, and Škoda –the next step on our path to becoming the global automotive tech driver.”
